If Chakra really exist it's not an easy question, and maybe it’s not even the right one.
I don’t know if the chakras exist as independent energy vortexes within us, or if they arise through our own consciousness and, perhaps, through the collective consciousness. What I do know is that if you don’t believe in them, they probably won’t exist for you.
We all carry the same essential energies, love, fear, belonging, forgiveness, willpower and so on, and they can move in the body as scattered energies. Working with the chakra system simply gives these energies a place to live: a structure, a language, a map. It helps us bring order to the inner chaos so we can sense, balance, and direct our energy in ways that are healing and functional.
In that sense, the chakras are both real and symbolic, real because our attention gives them life. Energy follows focus, and when we visualize the colors, sounds, and sensations in the body of each chakra, we’re teaching our mind to communicate with the subtle body.
It’s a bit like a grocery store: we know that all the milk is in one aisle, so we don’t have to wander aimlessly to find it. Or like a light switch, we expect to find it near the door. These patterns are part of both our personal and collective experience. If someone moves the coconut milk or installs the switch somewhere else, they don’t disappear, they just take longer to find.
The chakra system works the same way. It’s a collective map that helps us navigate our inner world, making it easier to access specific energies within ourselves. But the collective consciousness alone can’t make the chakras come alive in you, only you can do that. You, and/or a spiritual guide supporting you, can bring them to life through awareness, intention, and experience.
If you don’t use the chakra system , you can still access the feelings, memories, and energies held within you. Those energies exist regardless of the map you choose. It just might take a little more time, or a different kind of navigation. You may need another structure, another language, another framework like the five elements, the meridians, or qi, or even your own personal method to use energy. Energy systems don’t create the energy; they simply help us locate and work with it more easily, especially from an energy healing perspective. They offer pathways — but the energy itself is in our body, waiting to be felt, understood, and transformed
So perhaps the real question isn’t “Do chakras exist?” but “How can we embody them?”
How can we make them alive within us?
Whether or not they exist as physical energy centers, I believe we can create and experience them through consciousness. Through focus, breath, and collective resonance, they come alive,no longer abstract concepts that require belief, but living pathways of energy and meaning within us, felt and known through direct experience.
I recently made a video sharing my personal perspective on this topic, along with some practical tips on how to work with the chakra system in your yoga practice and classes:
