Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about what it means to feel at home. Not just in a physical space, but in our own bodies, in ourselves. Have you ever gone through a time when everything felt unsteady? When life kept moving, but you couldn’t quite find your ground? I’ve been there. And what I’ve learned is this: when the ground feels shaky, the most healing thing we can do is return to our roots.
The root chakra, or Muladhara, is the first energy center in the body’s chakra system, and it holds the key to our sense of safety, survival, and support. When it’s aligned, we feel grounded and secure. When it’s blocked, life can feel like we’re walking on shifting sand, no matter how “together” things look on the outside.
What Is the Root Chakra, Really?
In Sanskrit, muladhara means “root support.” It’s located at the base of the spine and is associated with the earth element—which makes perfect sense. This chakra is your energetic foundation.
Your ground.
Your reminder that you have a right to be here.
When this chakra is in balance, we feel at home in our bodies and in the world. We trust our path. We move through life with a quiet kind of steadiness.
But when it’s out of balance? We might feel anxious, disconnected, unsafe, or just not right. The body might speak through lower back pain, fatigue, or digestive issues. The mind might spin in stories about fear, scarcity, or not belonging.
How Do You Know If Your Root Chakra Is Blocked?
This can show up in so many ways. Here are a few signs I often notice in myself and clients:
Mental + Emotional Signs:
- Feeling overwhelmed or stuck
- Rushing through the day, never fully landing
- Persistent anxiety or fear
- Struggles with trust or boundaries
- A lingering sense that you don’t quite belong
Physical Signs:
- Tension in your lower back, legs, or hips
- Digestive issues ( stress belly or constipation)
- Fatigue, burnout, or poor sleep
- A general disconnection from the body
Why Balancing This Chakra Matters
When the root chakra is out of alignment, it’s hard to focus on anything else. We’re stuck in survival mode, often without realizing it.
But when this energy center is supported, there’s a shift. We feel more calm, capable, and at peace. We move from fear to trust. We begin to soften into the present moment, and that softening creates space for everything else: love, creativity, connection, joy.
You might feel:
- A deeper connection with your body
- A natural slowing down of your nervous system
- More ease in daily decisions
- A greater sense of safety and security
- A sense of belonging—to yourself, your community, the earth
What Does It Mean to Truly Belong?
Belonging isn’t about fitting in.
It’s not about being chosen, approved of, or meeting someone else’s expectations.
True belonging begins when you choose yourself, again and again.
To belong is to exhale into who you are.
To feel safe in your own skin.
To know that you don’t need to shrink or perform to be worthy of love.
It’s the knowing that you are already part of something greater,
the rhythm of your breath,
the beating of the earth beneath your feet,
the cycles of nature that hold you without asking anything in return.
This sense of belonging lives in the root chakra.
It’s where you remember that you are not separate from life, but deeply woven into it.
When this energy center is nourished, you no longer question your place in the world, you feel it.
In your bones.
In your breath.
In the way you walk through your day with quiet trust.
Simple Ways to Support Your Root Chakra
You don’t have to overhaul your life to realign your root. In fact, the most powerful shifts often come from the most grounded practices:
Move your body with intention
Try yoga postures like Tadasana (Mountain Pose), Tree Pose (Vrksasana), or Child’s Pose. These poses ground you through your feet, hips, and spine. Breathe deep and feel the support underneath you.
Eat grounding foods
Think root vegetables, warm grains, stews—anything that reminds your body it’s cared for. Let meals become a ritual of nourishment.
Visualize red
In meditation, picture a deep red light at the base of your spine, growing stronger with every breath. This color is the vibration of the root chakra.
Connect with the earth
Walk barefoot. Sit under a tree. Feel the weight of your body fully supported by the ground. Let nature recalibrate your energy.
Carry grounding crystals
Stones like red jasper, hematite, and black tourmaline can help absorb fear and stabilize your energy. Carry one in your pocket or place it near your feet during meditation.

Final Thoughts
When life feels like too much, too fast, too uncertain, I remind myself to come back to the beginning. To the base. To the root.
You don’t need to fix everything at once. Just return to your body. Your breath. The ground beneath you.
You are allowed to feel safe. You are allowed to take up space.
You belong. To this Breath. To this Body. To this Earth.
